In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Children’s Writers and Illustrators of BC Society (CWILL BC) is proud to present THE WALKING READ, a costume gala benefitting the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.
CWILL BC is a group of published writers and illustrators for children. With close to 150 members across British Columbia, they exchange information about creating literary works for young people and communicate and collaborate with other arts groups, schools, and libraries in BC and Canada.
BC Children’s Hospital Foundation works with children, families, caregivers and British Columbians to raise funds to support BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, and the Child & Family Research Institute. Shar Levine, the President of CWILL BC Society, says the reason they chose to hold a benefit for BCCHF was “because it is a wonderful opportunity for our organization to give back to the community, while at the same time celebrating the continued success of our vibrant organization.”
“Few people realize that some of the finest authors and illustrators of children’s books live in BC and, in particular, Vancouver,” Levine added. “This year’s winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for a Children’s book was Susin Nielson, a member of CWILL, for The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larson. As well, PJ Sarah Collins was given the 2012 TD Book Award for her novel What Happened to Serenity.”
The Gala, scheduled for Friday, June 14, at the glamourous Richmond Open Road Lexus dealership, features great food, music by the Gale Force Blues Band, drinks, a live and silent auction, a photo booth, swag bags, and a costume contest. Attendees are encouraged to come as their favourite children’s book characters, be it Peter Pan, a Star-Bellied Sneech, or Katniss Everdeen.
The event will give prizes for: Best Costume from a Children’s Book, Best Costume from a Canadian Children’s Book, and Best Costume from a CWILL BC member’s Book.
Tickets are $60 and will NOT be sold at the door. For more information please visit www.thewalkingread.com or to purchase tickets: http://thewalkingread.eventbrite.com/
